Carbomer Is A Polyethoxylated Castor Oil. It Is Prepared By Reacting 35 Moles Of Ethylene Oxide With Mole Of Castor Oil. The Resulting Product Is A Mixture; The Major Component Is The Material In Which The Hydroxyl Groups Of The Castor Oil Triglyceride Have Ethoxylated With Ethylene Oxide To Form Polyethylene Glycol Ethers. Minor Components Are The Polythyelene Glycol Esters Of Ricinoleic Acids, Polyethelene Glycols And Polyethyelene Glycol Ethers Of Glycerol. It Is A Synthetic, Nonionic Surfactant Used To Stabilizer Emulsions Of Nonpolar Materials In Water.
Applications:
Emulsifier
Carbomer range is excellent versatile emulsifying agent. It emulsifies major hydrophobic substances like fatty acids, fatty alcohols, mineral oil etc.
Film Former
Carbomer range improves film forming capacity and flow properties. ORYNOPHOR is preferred in cream, lotion, lipstick etc. to improve film forming capacity.
Solubilizer
Carbomer range improves water solubility of major water insoluble products. It is compatible with most of the commonly used ingredients. It helps to solubilize different pharmaceutical active ingredients from BCS class II and class IV and as well as others included but not limited as like Vitamins like vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D, vitamin E acetate, Nepafenac, Brinzolamide, Cyclosporine, Dextromethorphan salts, Povidone iodine etc. It is also used as solubilizer and stabilizer for oils and perfumes in cosmetic industries.
Aerosol Formulations
Carbomer improves solubility of the propellant in aerosol in aqueous phase
Dissolution Improver
It is generally used up to 5.0% w/w of API to improve dissolution of poorly soluble active ingredients like Cephalosporins group of drugs Cefuroxime salts, Albendazole etc. It should be mixed with API with or without heating and then dissolved in vehicle (Aqueous/ Non aqueous).
Moisturizer
Carbomer range improves moisturizing effect and soft feeling.
Volatility Retardant
Carbomer range retards volatilities of solvents. It can be used for highly volatile products like after shave lotion, perfumes etc. to retain its effect for longer period.
